We designed the graphics for the Crafts Council’s touring exhibition ‘A Curious Turn’ of Automata, working with 3D designers Mentsen. The exhibition launched in London during The London Design Festival, at The Habitat Gallery; Platform, on the Kings Road.

The exhibition explores the history of automata – ‘amazing moving mechanical sculptures’ operated by the turn of a crank to set the mechanics in motion to amaze, entertain and provoke thought in the audience.

REG created an identity to give the impression of movement by incorporating details from the exhibits into the letter forms of the title of the exhibition. The swan references the iconic life-size Silver Swan, one of the most famous automata dating from 1773. This idea was continued on the title panels, and within the exhibition guide.

The exhibition will tour the UK in 2017. For more information:  http://www.craftscouncil.org.uk/what-we-do/a-curious-turn
